Sports Podiatry is one of the many subcategories or special interest pathways that are found within the Podiatry profession. A Sports Podiatrist will assess, treat and manage lower limb injuries and dysfunction, with a particular consideration toward the effects of sporting activities on the lower limb. Often the goals of the patient and practitioner are directed toward injury rehabilitation and a prompt return to sport.
The field of Sports Podiatry requires all the anatomical knowledge and assessment skills, required for an accurate biomechanical assessment of the foot and ankle. A good Sports Podiatrist must also understand the stress and strain characteristics of soft tissue, the circumstances leading to fatigue and tissue failure, and the ideal conditions and programs for tissue rehabilitation. A sound understanding of many different sporting activities, footwear is worn in these activities as well as the specific movements involved in each sport will enable the Sports Podiatrist to create the optimum injury management plan.
