Morton’s Neuroma (or neuritis) is the inflammation of a nerve that runs between the long bones in the ball of the foot (metatarsals). It can result in shooting pain, tingling, numbness and swelling. The pain is usually exacerbated by walking or standing on tiptoes.
This condition can be particularly debilitating as the nerve condition gets worse the longer that the inflammation exists at the site.
The cause of this neuroma is unknown, however contributing factors include poor biomechanics including high arched feet, flat feet, bunions and hammer toes, certain sporting activities and incorrect footwear.
Fortunately, a neuroma is usually very easy to diagnose and treat.
