Morton's Neuroma Symptoms

What is Morton’s Neuroma?

Morton’s Neuroma (or neuritis) is the inflammation of a nerve that runs between the long bones in the ball of the foot (metatarsals). This condition can be particularly debilitating and make it very difficult to go about daily activity. If left untreated, this condition will often get worse, if the inflammation still exists at the site. Unfortunately, the cause of Morton’s Neuroma is currently unknown, however, we do know that certain factors can make an individual predisposed to developing the condition or exacerbating it. These factors include:

  • High arched feet
  • Flat feet
  • Bunions
  • Hammertoes
  • Certain sporting activities
  • Incorrect footwear
  • Previous foot injuries

The team at East Gosford Podiatry are well versed in diagnosing and treating patients who suffer from Morton’s Neuroma.

Morton's Neuroma Symptoms

Morton’s Neuroma Symptoms

There are several symptoms that can indicate a person may be suffering from Morton’s Neuroma. The main symptom is typically pain in the ball of your foot. This may feel like a burning or stabbing sensation, and it can even feel like you are standing on a small rock or pebble. Other symptoms of this condition include:

  • Numb sensation in toes and top of feet
  • Difficulty walking due to the pain
  • Tingling feeling

Morton’s Neuroma Treatment

Fortunately, Morton’s Neuroma is usually easy to diagnose and treat by a qualified podiatrist. The treatment that your podiatrist administers is dependent on the severity of your symptoms and particular case. Your podiatrist will often use a graduated plan, meaning they will begin with conservative treatments and progressively adapt this treatment if the symptoms are not subsiding. Treatment options usually include:

  • Footpads, arch supports and insoles
  • Prescribing specific footwear
  • Physical therapy
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Rest
  • Applying Ice to the affected area
  • Injections

There are more extreme treatments for the most severe cases but these are uncommon. Often, this condition is quite easy to treat and our patient’s symptom subsides rather quickly.
