A Biomechanical assessment is a detailed analysis of your foot and lower limb posture and function, to diagnosed pain or injury, and to determine contributing factors to the injury. It allows us to identify abnormalities, insufficiencies and how the body compensates for these irregularities. It involves the examination of the lower limbs, looking at their structure and alignment as well as their strengths and weaknesses.
Our podiatrists pay special attention to how the different muscles of the body are working, and how one misaligned joint in the body can affect the position and function of another joint. The assessment is not focused on the feet alone, but includes the pelvis, legs and knees, assessing the relationship between them.
This then allows us to correct any identified contributing factors, and to take preventative measures to decrease the chances of your injury or pain recurring.
While many lower limb injuries are obtained during competitive or recreational sporting activities, the foot pressures and stresses sustained during work and daily activities can also be enough to cause significant injury.
Our experience and comprehensive understanding of biomechanics, pain and injury is a result of a genuine interest, and active participation in a wide range of sports.
In a biomechanical assessment it is very important to examine the lower limbs as a whole because they are closely connected. Pain in one area can be due to a weakness or structural problem in another area. This pain is often called referred pain.
Our feet are a very complex structure of 28 different bones, 214 ligaments and 38 muscles, bearing our body weight as we walk every day. Sometimes our bodies struggle to cope with the constant stress applied to it from our day to day lives. Over time, the pressure from regular daily tasks such as standing, walking and running can bring about changes to the positions of the bones in our feet, knees, hips and spine. This results in an imbalance of muscle activity surrounding a joint, which can in turn cause pain and soreness. One muscle is over-worked, and another is underworked which acts as an antagonist and creates an imbalance in the stress applied to the muscles and joints in the body. This overload of stress applied to the same area of the body will eventually result in injury or a very slow recovery time from injury.
A Biomechanical Assessment is the first step in understanding any pain you’re experiencing, from your lower back to your lower limbs and feet.
