Ingrown toenails can be extremely painful, at times, having a significant effect on a person’s quality of life. An ingrown nail is not usually caused by a change in the direction a nail is growing, rather an irritation of the nail edge against the neighbouring skin in the nail sulci.
Ingrown nails may be caused by trauma, poor cutting technique, tight and poorly fitting footwear, or an excessively curved nail shape.
If the offending portion of nail actually punctures the skin, it is recognised as a foreign body, resulting in acute inflammation. The toe may become extremely sensitive to pressure, warm to touch or appear shiny and tight. In cases where an infection is present, a pus discharge and a bad odour may be evident.
Ingrown toenails should be assessed and treated by a qualified Podiatrist, who will be able to remove the problematic section of nail with minimal discomfort. They will then be able to advise you on preventative strategies.
In some recurring cases more permanent surgical intervention may be recommended.
“Too many people attempt ‘home surgery’, using inappropriate instruments. Often this only makes the problem worse, increasing the chance of a serious infection. Come and see a professional, to get instant pain relief and a plan to prevent your ingrown toenail recurring.”
